FINDING FORRESTER

Gus Van Sant returns to the Good Will Hunting formula of an extraordinary
young man and his teacher both learning lessons about life and themselves.
Strong performances from newcomer Rob Brown and Sean Connery don't
quite make the whole of Finding Forrester equal the sum of its parts.
I think the most glaring flaw in the film is the inclusion of F.
Murray Abraham's character, who was almost comical in the way Billy
Zane's mustache-twirling Oil Can Harry-like villain was in Titanic.
In addition, the supporting players, especially Anna Paquin, are
underutilized. Finding Forrester works best when it explores the
joy of writing, of printing words on the page and expressing yourself
in words. Unfortunately these scenes were underdeveloped and surprisingly
few and far between. All in all, Finding Forrester is a good movie
and it works.
