Busy week for me. I was in Washington DC Monday through Wednesday, had Lance Jr's rehersal dinner last night, his wedding tomorrow, and then my fiancee's bridal shower Sunday. At least we're not doing anything tonight.

DC was nice. I hadn't been there since I was about 8 years old, so it was like seeing everything for the first time. Actually, the most interesting thing about the trip was seeing all the people who worked in the Senate offices. Loads and loads of young, attractive women in every office. I guess you don't get to be a Senator by being a dummy. Although Diane Feinstein's office was pretty hot too, I don't know what that was about. I didn't get over to the Representative's offices, so I didn't get to see what Barney Frank's staff looked like.

The worst thing about the trip was that I was staying in a college apartment with only dorm beds to sleep on. I haven't slept on a plastic twin mattress in a long time, and I can't say that I've missed it. Plus, there was no TV, radio, or computer in the apartment. I'm not the kind of guy who needs to have the TV on all the time, but I didn't realize how creepy it could get in a place without one. I was alone down there, and I was done with everything I needed to do by eight o'clock every night. That left me with a lot of time to sit around a barren, cold, lonely apartment by myself. Next time I go, I'll shell out for an EconoLodge if I have to.

Even though I was only gone for a couple of days, it's good to be home. I don't like sleeping alone, and the hookers in DC were starting to get expensive. And I'm always freaked out in cities where they wait for the light before they start crossing the street. It just isn't the way I was raised. Finally, I like being able to go into most building without emptying my pockets and taking off my watch and shoes. You take that for granted when you don't live in a world under perpetual lockdown.

Shitty day out there today. And it was just getting warm. A lot of the snow is gone, but that's supposed to be replaced with another 3-5 inches tonight. At least the snow totals are gradually getting lower as the year goes on. I'm just hoping the weather will be a little warmer in Washington DC next week while I'm there.

I've bitched about Faithful being a shitty book, but it sounds a lot worse when Terry Francona whines about it. Yeah, they said some things about Tito in the book, but as Stephen King pointed out, if Francona reads the newspapers at all, he's surely heard a lot worse. I can only imagine he's being thin-skinned about it because he's annoyed at being called an idiot by two guys who aren't exactly baseball experts.

This is an interesting piece about the Boston Dirt Dogs website. I guess someone got sick of them taking stories without verifying them and putting up on the website, a la Matt Drudge, so he made up a false story about Nomar not wanting a World Series ring and fed it to Boston Dirt Dogs under an alias. Nomar eventually heard about the story after it had been reported nationally and denied it, and then the person who initially fabricated the story came forward and zinged Boston Dirt Dogs. I understand the point of the sting, and I have no sympathy for Boston Dirt Dogs, but didn't Nomar kind of get fucked here? The point the guy was trying to make was that Boston Dirt Dogs is an unreliable and sensationalistic source, but how is making up a story himself and getting it publicized worse than what Boston Dirt Dogs does? I understand he was trying to make a point, but that doesn't really help Nomar, who everyone now thinks is being bitchy and pissy and not accepting a World Series ring (not that it's a far stretch to believe that).

Boston Dirt Dogs is a pretty shitty website that I never go to. Still, it does annoy me that they pull shit like that, regardless of what I think about the perpetrator of the hoax. I don't know why it should bother me, it just does. In the same way the sports talk radio on WEEI bothers me, even though I never, ever turn it on unless there's a ball game. There are some things that manage to penetrate your consciousness and piss you off, despite the fact that you have extremely limited interaction with them. I guess it's a lot like how one of my friends claims to despise The View and Oprah Winfrey, even though he's single and works during the day and can't possibly watch either of them very much. In my case, I can't avoid fans whose opinions about thing are informed by the shit they hear on WEEI and from websites like Boston Dirt Dogs, so in my friend's case, it must be the ideas the women he knows get from shows like The View and the Oprah Winfrey show. What those notions could be, I have no idea. It's also possible that his hatred has no rational basis, or that he's like those people who listen to Howard Stern all morning just to get more and more pissed off. What some people will do with their time, I'll never understand.

The TD Banknorth Center? That's lame. Suddenly the Jeter Center is looking a lot better. I still can't believe they sold it out last night. I know everyone's excited, but folks, it's just Antoine Walker. Did you pile into the Fleet Center to see him when he was here before? Then why are you doing it now?

I can understand how someone can come to this country and never learn to speak English if they speak Spanish. At least there are plenty of other people you can talk to. But there's this lady who gets on my train this morning who very clearly only speaks something Slavic. I can't tell if it's Russian or Polish or what. But how many people in the city of Boston could possibly speak her language? I'm sure she has friends and family, but it seems to be that it would be in your best interest to pick up a little English, or hell, even a little bit of Spanish, if you're going to be living here. Maybe she's got some story I don't know about. I mean, she's obviously going somewhere every day, I'd have to assume wherever she's headed there are people she can communicate with.
